Hickory's Holiday Season Starts the Week Before Thanksgiving

October 22, 2026

If you plan to start Christmas in Hickory after Thanksgiving, you'll miss the first part of it. Santa lights the Union Square tree on Friday, November 20, 2026. That's six days before Thanksgiving, and it lands in the middle of a three-night run that opens with Handel's Messiah on Thursday and ends with Holidaypalooza on Saturday.

Hickory's 2026 holiday calendar has two busy stretches, not one long season. The first is the weekend before Thanksgiving. The second comes less than two weeks later, from December 2 through 6, when a university concert series, a three-day convention-center show, and a downtown ticketed event that sells out every year all happen at once. Between the two is a quiet week. After the second, the in-town calendar thins out quickly.

Why the Parade Comes a Week Early

The timing is on purpose. The City of Hickory says it holds the Lowes Foods Christmas Parade & Tree Lighting "the Friday before Thanksgiving" and calls it the city's holiday season kick-off. Lowes Foods has sponsored the parade since its first year.

The Downtown Hickory Development Association's event page has the schedule. Festivities start at 5:45 p.m., the Fallen Soldiers open the parade at 6 p.m., and Santa's float stops at Union Square so he can light the tree. The city's parade page also promises holiday music and shopping specials.

The route is short and loops back on itself, so where you stand matters:

  1. It starts at 4th Street NW and 1st Avenue NW.
  2. It follows 1st Avenue NW toward City Hall.
  3. It turns right on North Center Street.
  4. It turns right on Main Avenue NW.
  5. It goes through Union Square and leaves on Main Avenue NW, after Santa is dropped off at the square.

Anyone standing along Main Avenue NW near Union Square will see the whole parade and be in place for the tree lighting without moving. If you wait along 1st Avenue NW, you'll see the floats first, but you'll have to walk to the square for the tree.

Three Nights Back to Back

The parade is the middle of three nights in a row.

On Thursday, November 19, the Western Piedmont Symphony performs its Masterworks program, Handel's Messiah, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 52 16th Ave. NW. The symphony's 2026–2027 season announcement lists Masterworks tickets at $20 to $58.

On Friday, November 20, there's the parade and the tree lighting on Union Square.

On Saturday, November 21, there are two events. The City of Hickory and HDDA present Holidaypalooza on Union Square, but times and details haven't been posted yet. HDDA says to stay tuned as the date gets closer. The same morning, the 2026 HCA Christmas Market runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Hickory Christian Academy campus. The school says more than 40 local artisan vendors will be there.

That gives you a concert, a parade, a craft market, and a street event on the square in about 48 hours. Since Holidaypalooza's schedule isn't out yet, one easy Saturday plan is the HCA market in the morning and downtown later. Check the HDDA page again in November, because the timing could change that.

The Quiet Week

Thanksgiving week is the gap. Two things bring people back afterward.

Hickory Community Theatre opens FROZEN on Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving. It runs through December 12 at 30 3rd Street NW. Shows are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m., plus one Thursday show on December 10 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 to $18 through the theatre's box office.

The next day, Saturday, November 28, is Shop Small Saturday downtown. HDDA holds it every year on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, and in 2026 that's November 28. No hours have been posted yet.

So the stretch between the two busy periods has one family musical and one shopping day, and that's enough to bridge to December.

The First Weekend of December Fills Up

The second busy stretch is busier than the first. It runs Wednesday through Sunday, and several events overlap on Friday and Saturday.

Date Event Venue Time Cost
Wed., Dec. 2 A Lenoir-Rhyne Christmas, shortened presentation Grace Chapel, Lenoir-Rhyne University 10 a.m. Unticketed
Thu., Dec. 3 A Lenoir-Rhyne Christmas Grace Chapel, 625 7th Ave. NE 6:30 p.m. $10–$15
Fri., Dec. 4 2026 Hickory Christmas Show opens Hickory Metro Convention Center, 1960 13th Ave. Dr. SE Opens 9 a.m. $12 day / $18 weekend
Fri., Dec. 4 A Lenoir-Rhyne Christmas Grace Chapel 6:30 p.m. $10–$15
Fri., Dec. 4 WPS Foothills Pops: Holiday Spectacular J.E. Broyhill Civic Center, Lenoir 7:30 p.m. $33–$58
Sat., Dec. 5 Cookie Crawl Downtown Hickory 2–4 p.m. Ticketed
Sat., Dec. 5 A Lenoir-Rhyne Christmas Grace Chapel 5 and 7:30 p.m. $10–$15
Sun., Dec. 6 Hickory Christmas Show, final day Hickory Metro Convention Center Closes 4 p.m. $12 / $18

A Lenoir-Rhyne Christmas has five performances over four days, so it's the easiest event in the cluster to fit in. The Wednesday morning presentation is shorter and doesn't need a ticket. The Hickory Christmas Show runs from 9 a.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Sunday. If you're likely to go back a second day, the $18 weekend pass costs $6 more than a single day.

Friday night is where you'll have to pick. Lenoir-Rhyne's 6:30 p.m. performance and the symphony's 7:30 p.m. Holiday Spectacular in Lenoir overlap, and the symphony concert is in another town.

Planning Saturday, December 5

December 5 has the most going on of any day this season, and some of it is outside Hickory:

  • 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.: The Christmas Makers Market at The HUB Station Arts Center, 145 Cedar Valley Road in Hudson. It's free.
  • 2 p.m.: The Hudson Christmas Parade goes past The HUB Station.
  • 2 to 4 p.m.: Cookie Crawl in Downtown Hickory.
  • All day: The Hickory Christmas Show at the Metro Convention Center.
  • 5 and 7:30 p.m.: A Lenoir-Rhyne Christmas in Grace Chapel.

Cookie Crawl needs a ticket bought ahead of time. HDDA says it "always sells out fast." After you buy, bring your receipt to the HDDA tent on Union Square to get a Cookie Crawl Passport and map. Then you follow the route to pick up a different holiday cookie at each participating business. HDDA hasn't posted the price or the sale date yet, so keep an eye on the annual events page.

One way to fit the day together: the Hudson market in the morning, back to Union Square by 2 p.m. for Cookie Crawl, then the 5 p.m. Lenoir-Rhyne performance. You'd skip the Hudson parade, but nothing overlaps. If you want to see the Hudson parade, you'll have to give up Cookie Crawl, since both start at 2 p.m.

After the Hickory Calendar Ends, the Lights Keep Going

After December 6, the in-town schedule gets short. FROZEN has one weekend left and closes Saturday, December 12.

For the rest of December, the main nearby outing is McAdenville. The Town of McAdenville turns on its Christmas Town U.S.A. light display downtown every night from December 1 through 26, 5:30 to 10 p.m. You can walk it or drive through it. Because it runs 26 nights, it's the one event on this list you don't have to plan around a single date.

If a season like this one has you thinking about a home closer to Union Square or the Lenoir-Rhyne area before next season, The Pinnacle Property Group NC can walk you through it calmly and clearly. And if you already own a home here, you can start with a free home valuation.
